New Features in Topos R2

| Description | New in R2 | System requirements | License agreement |

January 2007 43D launched Topos R2. Some of the new features included in this release are highlighted below.

Visualization

  • ZVI generation.
  • Viewshed generation.
  • Slope map generation.
  • Contour map generation.
  • Saving high resolution images in cylindrical panorama projection.
  • Saving high resolution 2D plan view images.

Modeling

  • Power line modeling.
  • Tree and forest modeling.

GIS

  • GIS file loading: shape files, MapInfo files, etc.
  • DXF file loading.
  • Reading many more DTM and image file formats.
  • GIS Inspector to inspect additional data in GIS files.

User Interface

  • New user interface, and new menu layout.
  • Improved navigation facility.
  • 2D overview.
  • Overview movement mode.

Terrain manipulation

  • Fit to terrain of georeferenced drapes.
  • Terrain modifiers.
  • Selfshadowing lightmaps.
  • GIS data draping and extrusion.
  • Improved wireframe drawing.
  • Imprinting GIS areas on the terrain.

These features are of course just additional to the already rich feature set of Topos. For further description and screenshots please click here.

Some feature highlights

ZVI's

  • Generate a Zone of Visual Impact (ZVI) map based on any layout of turbines or other 3D objects in your model
  • The ZVI will automatically be added to your terrain as a drape
  • The ZVI will also be available as a separate raster file for use in presentation material
  • Optionally blend the ZVI with any of your existing terrain drapes - e.g. raster maps or other ZVI's for cumulative impact.

Power Line Modeling

  • Point and click on terrain to insert and position pylons
  • or insert a line of pylons in one go from comma-separated list of geo-referenced positions
  • Adjust tension, color and width of catanaries
  • Use any 3DS model as a template for your pylons

GIS integration

  • Load GIS data from MapInfo TAB or ESRI Shape files
  • Imprint GIS geometry on a terrain drape
  • Extrude GIS or 3D models to a specified height above terrain ground - e.g. for modeling blocks of forestry
  • Create terrain modifiers from GIS data to raise or lower parts of terrain

View Sheds

  • Generate view shed maps: colouring the parts of the terrain visible from a certain point of view.
  • Go to any position in your model - prespecified through a viewpoint or just your current position - and generate a view shed
  • The view shed map will automatically be added to your terrain as a drape
  • The view shed map will also be available as a separate raster file for use in presentation material
  • Optionally blend a view shed with any other drape - e.g. with a ZVI or with view sheds for other view points

2D Overview and Bird's eye mode

  • 2D overview window showing your current position within the 3D view
  • Have view point positions shown on 2D overview
  • Point and click on view points in 2D overview to quickly jump there in the 3D view
  • Bird's eye mode for moving in 2D over 3D terrain: transforms your movement tools for ease of use when looking straight down on terrain.

Gradient maps

  • Generate gradient maps coloured according to steepness of the terrain
  • Gradient map will automatically be added to your terrain as a drape
  • Will also be available as a separate raster file for use in presentation material
  • Optionally blend the gradient map with any of your existing terrain drapes

Contour maps

  • Generate contour maps with contour lines and coloured according to altitude of terrain
  • Contour map will automatically be added to your terrain as a drape
  • Will also be available as a separate raster file for use in presentation material
  • Optionally blend the contour map with any of your existing terrain drapes

Trees and forests

  • Use simple bitmaps as models of objects like trees
  • Easily copy out large numbers objects for modeling e.g. forests
  • Design your own trees from scratch or based on photography
